Overview of barcode scanners

Barcode scanners are pretty similar to barcode readers. They are devices whose purpose is to read and interpret information stored on barcode labels. The terms of reading and scanning are somewhat confusing and are used indistinctively by people. However, it seems there is a consensus about a difference between barcode scanners and barcode readers. The former seems to use a different method for processing labels that is based on mirrors. Also scanners are generally fixed and are huge devices when compared to scanners, which can be small and portable. The point is that barcode scanners are targeted to the same market than readers because it seems people is not really interested in the exact terminology of both words.

Barcode scanners are generally used at retail stores to process items very fast. Most scanners are omni-directional and can interpret the information on a barcode label if this is passed over the flat surface where a lot of lasers are shot in all directions. The positions of mirrors inside the scanner help to do a faster lecture. Normally, you don’t have to aim a scanner in order to make a lecture, you just approach the item with the label you need to be read and the scanner does its job.

Barcode scanners normally use an array of lasers and photodiodes to measure the intensity of light which is reflected back from a label when a lecture is made. This process is pretty similar to the one used by barcode readers, is just that scanners normally use more lasers. These machines have made possible to increase efficiencies in most logistic processes of companies and in many areas. Warehousing is now more organized and shipments are processed much faster than ever before. The whole technology of barcodes is really impressive and simplifies a lot the job of many companies.
