BARCODE SYSTEMS

A barcode label printer is part of a larger barcode system. The barcode label printer must comply and fit with the other products in the barcode system. Along with the barcode label printer, a complete system includes a barcode scanner, software, and labels. A barcode label printer must be compatible with the needs for a specific type of symbol for the label, resolution of printing for the scanner, and speed of printing. Types of barcodes include Code 39, Code 128, Intervleaved 2 of 5, UPC, as well as EAN. Other kinds of 2D codes include PDF 417, Data Matrix and Maxicode. One barcode label printer may support all of these while another barcode label printer may only support one or a few.

Different countries use different codes and some codes only allow the coding of numbers, or letters A to D. The resolution of the barcode label printer is important as it must be compatible with the resolution needed for the barcode scanner. A cheaper barcode label printer may not support the resolution needed for a more expensive barcode scanner. The speed of printing is another issue that separates one barcode label printer from another.

One barcode label printer may print 3 inches a second while another barcode label printer can be much slower. The speed of a barcode label printer is important to coordinate with the size of the job.

A barcode label printer can cost anywhere between $100 and $2,000 depending on the speed and options available. A less expensive barcode label printer may work fine for small jobs while larger printing jobs may require a more expensive barcode label printer. Barcode label printers have become a technology that most business can afford and most business have put them to good use without hiring outside help.
