It can be tough to decide whether to outsource your label printing needs to an outside firm. Fortunately, there is a lot of guidance available on the subject. In this case, however, I want to focus almost exclusively on one method you can use to determine whether it is in your best interests to hire a label printer.

Ask the competition.

Well, you probably do not want to knock on their door and solicit their opinion, but you do want to keep a close eye on what they are doing and to compare it carefully to your own labelling efforts. Are they doing something better than you are? If they have a professional aboard, chances are that they are. Are they doing something interesting? If so, could you catch up with them or do something more interesting?

Take a good look at what the competition is doing and be objective in assessing what you know of their labelling methods and the actual appearance of their labels. Do not glorify your efforts--be honest, but critical. When it is all said and done, you want to know whether it is time for you to make a change and bring in a professional.

By keeping your eye on the enemy, you can better understand what a label printer might be able to do for you and your business. Hiring a label printer does not have to be all about what is happening with you. Business is always relative, and in many cases, the need for a new label printer will be determined primarily by his ability to allow you to compare favourably with others.
