Direct Thermal
Direct thermal printers require the use of heat activated thermal papers and films, without the need of a thermal transfer ribbon. The print is not as high quality, as that of thermal transfer printing and over time labels printed using the direct thermal method of printing will darken, especially when the surface gets scratched or subjected to heat and UV light. Direct thermal printing is mainly used in the food industry where most items are stored away from UV light and heat. In addition to this the life span of the label is usually less than 1 year, whilst being a simple and cheap process it is perfect for a fast moving industry such as the food industry.
Thermal Transfer
This method can be applied to a wide range of materials from paper to film and even foil. The printer requires the use of a thermal transfer ribbon which comes in 3 different varieties wax, wax resin, resin. The ribbons are available in different colours, so you won’t be limited to black print like with direct thermal and the print quality is very high as this method of printing produces crisp and durable text, images and barcodes making it excellent for labels that require longevity.
