Thermal transfer printing is a digital printing method in which material is applied to paper by melting a coating of ribbon. It contrasts with direct thermal printing, where no ribbon is present in the process. The process has been invented by Sato and the world’s first thermal-transfer label printer was produced in 1981. Thermal transfer is most commonly used for barcode labels for product and shipping identification.
